Technology

Blockchain

Blockchain technology has revolutionized the way we store and share information. Using cryptography to keep information secure, blockchain offers a decentralized database based on a network of independent computers, called nodes.

Each of these nodes has to validate and approve a change in the network, which reduces the dependencies and vulnerabilities of the centralized storage of information.

Identity verification

Just as when you go to a notary to sign a document, or when you go to a public registry to make a record, and they ask for your id document to verify your identity, the certifications issued by Musicdibs must be associated with a previously verified identity to have legal validity.

But don’t worry about this: your personal data will not be shared with anyone and they will only be used for this purpose. When we register your creation in blockchain this information will not be accessible, since thanks to cryptography we “anonymize” all operations, keeping your personal data safe.

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs)

An NFT is a non-fungible token, something with unique value, that represents ownership of a digital asset, such as a song, photo, video clip, or digital artwork. In contrast, “fungible” means interchangeable, so it can be replaced by something of equal value.

The NFT is sort of like the mp3 file plus a tag that says “this file is original, limited edition, and can’t be copied.” In other words, NFTs allow digital items to be treated.

Frequently ask questions

If I can certify something already certified, then could anyone certify a piece as theirs even if it has been certified before?2022-06-15T10:13:36+01:00

Yes, but it doen’t suppose a problem! The important thing is who did it first and when (identity of who did it and when it was done). Every time something is registered (albeit repeated) a timestamp associated with the identity of the person who made the certification and the certified content is generated.

Musicdibs, being a tool with validity and worldwide scope, can’t know if someone has already certified something before another person in another registration system or another part of the world. As we said, that is not what is relevant, but the hability to prove in a reliable way WHO DID IT BEFORE 😉. And that is what Musicdibs guarantees you.

Can I register musical pieces on behalf of other people with my account?2022-06-08T12:04:44+01:00

Unfortunately, registration in the name of third parties is ONLY allowed and legally recognized in the exceptional case of minors. User accounts are unipersonal and non-transferable, and may belong to persons or entities (commercial, associations, etc.).

You must bear in mind that for the registration of a creation, the identity of the person or entity to whom the ownership of those rights will be granted must first be verified, and this is only possible if that same person or entity is the one that you have opened the account on Musicdibs and verified it with your official identity document. This is precisely how possible identity theft or even property theft is avoided, since only the person or entity that registers is the one that has ownership of the creation.

We recommend that you propose to those people that they each open a Musicdibs account with their data. It is very simple!

Can a minor register their productions?2022-06-21T16:51:55+01:00

Minors can request the registration of their copyright through their parents or legal representatives, who must prove their relationship with the minor through the appropriate document (family book or legal document that proves the guardianship or legal representation of the minor).

How long does the registration of my piece last?2022-06-02T09:18:41+01:00

Blockchain registers are permanent, and the duration of copyright protection is subject to the legislation of each country.

What type of files can I register?2022-05-19T11:02:26+01:00

You can register all kinds of files, both finished work in any digital audio format (mp3, WAV, AIFF, WMA, etc.) and text files, whether it’s sheet music or lyrics.

Once registered, how can I prove the authorship of my piece to a third party?2022-06-27T09:37:05+01:00

The registration of the piece generates a hash and a time stamp, where the identification data is encrypted, which automatically link the author with his creation. In the event of a legal dispute, anyone can validate said code and verify that you are the original author.

Once certified, it is important not to make any changes to the original file, so as not to modify its digital trace.

Does the registration of my piece have renewal costs?2022-06-02T10:34:42+01:00

No, you will only pay for the initial registration.

Does registering my piece in the blockchain have legal validity?2022-06-02T10:35:17+01:00

Registering your music in the blockchain is an alternative, fast and reliable means to avoid plagiarism when you share it on social networks and music platforms. It is a commitment to the future, and facilitates the process of comparing different pieces and verifying the identity of their original creator.

What happens if someone registers my song in another registry? Can I use my Musicdibs certificate to claim my authorship?2022-06-15T09:56:34+01:00

You should know that intellectual property is not like industrial property.
In this sense, it is important to note that in the European Union it is not mandatory to carry out an administrative act to be considered the author of a piece and it is enough to demonstrate its previous creation. The intellectual property of a literary, artistic or scientific work corresponds to the author by the sole fact of its creation. Therefore, the author, artist or creator has automatic protection, unlike Industrial Property (trademarks, patents, industrial designs,…) in which it is necessary to register to be considered the owner of the rights.
If someone copies a song previously registered on the Blockchain, you can provide your registration as valid proof in a plagiarism complaint, since a receipt is generated in every Musicdibs registry that contains all the necessary information, both to identify the work in your name ant to prove the registration with its time stamp. With the Musicdibs certificate you will be able to demonstrate that you were it’s creator and that therefore have the right of ownership over it.

How would a song be registered when it belongs to two or more authors?2022-06-29T15:18:41+01:00

The best way to register the co-authorship or multiple-ownership of a creation with Musicdibs is by making two records in the blockchain: one of the song (lyrics, sound recording…) and one with all the information of the authors (name and document of identity of each co-author), any information on the distribution of each co-author’s rights and the information of the song registration made previously (transaction identifier, file’s digital trace and blockchain network). Additionally, you must select the option “I want this certification to be public” in both registers.

By doing it in this way you can verify the registration of both the song and the co-authorship document and the timestamp of the records guarantees its legal validity.

Can I register partial creations before registering the final one?2022-06-21T16:53:31+01:00

Yes, and in fact it is recommended, to avoid someone plagiarizing you during your creation process before your work is finished. Thanks to our reduced cost, especially that of the annual subscription, you can make as many partial registrations of your work as you want, which will also allow you to share your creation with whoever you want with full guarantee that it is protected and in your name.
